A copy once belonging to the library of the Royal Society of Arts, London. This first edition is filled with illustrated throughout, with images ranging from 'coquetry in the head-dress' to jewelled birds. Collated, complete. A 32 page publisher's catalogue appears at the rear.As an ex-library book, there is a decorative label depicting the edifice of the Royal Society of Arts library on the front pastedown, with an ink stamp overlaid stating ' withdrawn from RSA Library&apos. Similarly, a blue ink stamp stating 'Royal Society of Arts' appears at the head of the title page.This is an English language translation of French art critic Charles Blanc's 1875 work. Focussing on personal adornment, chapters include 'hair-dressing as a mark of character in men', use of enamel in jewellery, and the use of colour in clothing. In a full cloth binding. Imperceptibly rebound, with panels of cloth from the original spine and boards laid down. Externally very smart with light rubbing, but still bright overall. Decorative label depicting the edifice of the Royal Society of Arts library on the front pastedown, with an ink stamp overlaid stating ' withdrawn from RSA Library Internally, firmly bound. In this first edition, the French art critic Charles Blanc reflects on the artists of his time. Published in French, with numerous in-text illustrations. With sections on the architects Felix Duban and Leon Vaudoyer, the painters Eugene Delacroix and Henry Lays, the sculptors David D'Angers and Barye, as well as chapters on contemporary caricaturists, medal engravers, and lithographers. With a sticker from the Library Guille-Alles in Guernsey to the front board of the volume, and a system number to the spine. With a bookplate to from the library to the first pastedown, and an institutional stamp to the title page. In a red quarter leather binding over patterned boards. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the spine. The leather is a little scuffed and rubbed to the joints, particularly near the head of the spine.
